MATHEWS, Bishop John Henry Jr., 85, born May 31, 1932 departed this life on Sunday, August 6, 2017. He was born in Wakulla, FL to the late John H. and Emma (Donaldson) Mathews. He was the third child of six siblings. In 1944, his parents moved the family to Dayton, Ohio for the economic betterment of the family. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1950. Shortly thereafter, he served as Soldier of the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1957, he married his angel, Dorothy Jones, and to this marriage was born two children. He became a member of and was saved at Mt. Zion AOH Church of God, Dayton, Ohio. He obtained a Diploma of Theology from Dayton Bible Institute as well as attended additional courses at American Bible College. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Trustee, Usher, Missionary, and minister prior to his assignment as Pastor of the First AOH Church, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1965. After 5 years of pastoring, he was elevated to Overseer in 1970. He served as Overseer of several churches in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, Washington, DC, Michigan, and Ohio. In 1975, he was assigned to return to Mt. Zion AOH Church of God as Pastor. For a short period of time, he served as interim Pastor of churches in Hamilton and Cleveland, Ohio and New York. For the past 42 years, the original church building of Mt. Zion was paid in full and an adjoining new edifice was built in 2002. He was consecrated to the office of Bishop in 1981 and in 2015, he became the International/National Presiding Prelate of the Apostolic Overcoming Holy Church of God, Inc. He was also Diocesan of the Ohio Ninth District and the 28th District in Alabama.
Bishop Mathews was an anointed preacher and teacher who was endowed with wisdom through the Word of God. He was a pillar in the Faith community and a respected leader and mentor in the Dayton region and beyond. His focus was working in the public sector to encourage optimism in today's youth and promote family values through spiritual educational programs. He served as a member of the Executive Board of the NAACP, Dayton, as well as numerous civic organizations. He had a tremendous sense of humor, which he frequently incorporated into his sermons as well as his everyday life, and received great joy in making others laugh. He preached tirelessly until the last few weeks of this life. Always encouraging the saints to “Love One Another”.
He leaves to mourn his faithful wife, Dorothy; his son, Timothy (Madonna) Mathews, his daughter, Diane (Archie) Young; his grandchildren, Timothy Jr. and Megan Mathews, and Alyssa Young; his brother, Jesse (Lois) Mathews, his sisters, Lucille Herring and Mildred Crawford, all of Dayton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Barbara Mathews, a special aunt, Omega Matthews; and a host of relatives, god-children and friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bishop John H. Mathews, Jr. Scholarship Fund, C/O Mt. Zion A.O.H. church. Interment Woodland Cemetery.
